Every element of life in Copenhagen appears to be there by design. The dramatic metro stations. The boutique coffee shops and quirky boutiques. Even the people seem pulled from a designer catalogue. It’s everywhere you look, and with reasonable rents allowing young start-up companies to thrive, the streets are lined with independent, artisan stores instead of mass-manufactured name brands. Yes, life here is quite lovely… to look at and to live in. It’s no surprise that the rest of the world has a big ol’ crush on Copenhagen.

One of those independent (and thriving) Copenhagen labels is Samsøe & Samsøe, a fashion company based upon unique and recognizable Scandinavian style. And their menswear designer, Gitte Wetter, knows where to go to find creative inspiration in the well-worn favorites and the hidden gems of her hometown. We asked her to show us where she goes to find ideas, to enjoy the city, and where she chooses to take guests who have never seen Copenhagen before.

Central Hotel Café
Gitte: The world’s smallest café in Vesterbro. Like the name says, it’s a very small café and hotel with only one room. I often walk by this place and drink my coffee with friends or get it to go. There are only four or five seats so it can get a little busy, and hard to find a place to sit.

Louisiana Museum
Gitte: I keep returning to this fantastic art museum. I have traveled around the world to experience different art museums, but Louisiana will always stay on top of my list, both because of the architectural beauty and the fantastic exhibitions. I often come here to get inspired for my work.

Frederiksberg Secondhand Market
Gitte: During the summer months there is a secondhand market here every Saturday from 8 to 14 o’clock. Here you can find everything that you’ve ever dreamed of! It’s a cosy way to spend your Saturday.

V1 Gallery, Kødbyen
Gitte: Copenhagen is filled with small interesting galleries. One of my favourites is V1 Gallery in Kødbyen, the meatpacking district of Copenhagen. It’s a breeding ground for young underground artists, both Danish and international, who over the years became well known, like Richard Colman, Wes Lange, Husk mit navn, and Troels Carlsen.

20A, Nørrebro
Gitte: Ravnsborggade in Nørrebro has been blooming the past few years and has cosy restaurants, vintage stores and bars. 20A is an informal restaurant that serves simple and well-prepared food. Here you can relax outside with a good glass of wine on a Copenhagen summer night.

Amagerfælled, Amager
Gitte: I’ve recently biked through Amager and through the nature area Amagerfælled, a little oasis in the middle of the city. Past the newly built Ørestad, where Danish architect Bjarke Ingels has created some unique apartments such as VM-bjerget and 8-tallet. The city’s best ice cream shop is called Ismageriet in Kongelundsvej. The ice cream is not only fantastic, but the place looks like it’s from the 1950s.

Loppen, Christiania
Gitte: Music is an important part of my life and I often got to concerts. Loppen is one of the music venues with the best atmosphere that Copenhagen can offer. It’s a small stage where you can experience small and medium-sized bands. There are a lot of different kinds of people coming to this venue and for me it’s a good source of inspiration for my work. Loppen is in Christiania, which is also worth a visit.

Værnedamsvej, Vesterbro / Frederiksberg
Gitte: I live in Værnedamsvej. It’s a very cosy street that reminds you of Paris in many ways, filled with cafés, restaurants and shops. If you go shopping, check out our Samsøe & Samsøe  store, Dora Interior, and a the cute little flower shop. If you’re having lunch, I can recommend Granola.

Kind of Blue, Ravnsborggade, Nørrebro
Gitte: Ravnsborggade has been blossoming in the last couple of years with cafés, restaurants, vintage stores and bars. Kind of Blue is a very laidback bar, where I often go to with my colleagues for a drink after work. There is a chilled-out atmosphere and old-school rock music playing in the background, I’m sure I’ll spend many hours of the summer at this place.
