It’s true: beach season is upon us. It’s the time of year when we start itching to stuff our winter coats into the back of our closets and break the bathing suits out of storage. So while much of the world thaws out from winter’s chill, we like to focus on places where beach season never really ends. If you’d rather avoid scenes packed with Spring Breakers, we know hundreds of oceanfront options where you can feel at home… away from home.

Here are 5 easy beach getaways for North America:

Sure, there is the quintessential Spring Break mayhem of Cancun. But there is a lot more to the crown jewel of Mexican destinations once you get off the beaten path of bars and cruise ships. See Mayan ruins, white sand beaches, and Isla Mujeres. Or adventurous activities involving snorkeling fins, kayak paddles, zip lines, and scuba dives. Everything you could want from a beach getaway is within reach in Cancun. You just have to know where to look for it.

Playa del Carmen
Just around the corner from Cancun, Playa del Carmen has made its own name in trendy hotspots, relaxed settings, European sentiments, Italian influences, lively bars and clubs, snorkeling, scuba diving, and its own brand of attractions. The locals of Playa del Carmen have tried hard to retain the charm of its former fishing village roots, making the area more pedestrian-friendly and banning high rise condos, which we can most definitely appreciate.

Nothing says “I’m glamorous yet laid back” like frolicking on the shores of Malibu in a pair of paparazzi-proof shades. Malibu is an easy drive from L.A., but a little less scene-y than, say, the rest of the city. There’s the Getty Villa, oceanfront mansions for miles, Paradise Cove, celebrity spotting (they’re trying to get away from it all, just like you), and a strong surf culture to balance out the Hollywood star culture.

If you’re picturing the quintessential Hawaiian getaway, say ‘Aloha’ to Honolulu. Here, you’ll find the perfect jumping off point for all of your beach adventures: the iconic Waikiki beach, Iolani Palace, pineapple plantations, surf lessons, hikes to epic volcanoes and waterfalls, leis and luaus, and Mai Tais aplenty. If you want to go a little more remote, all of your Hawaiian adventures are a short drive away.

San Diego
If you’re in the states and looking for a city where you can enjoy year-round beach culture and sun on your skin, sand in your hair, and the best fish tacos and breakfast burritos you’ve ever put in your mouth, head straight to San Diego. The locals will be happy to point you toward the nearest brewery, skate park, or surf spot. Balboa Park, Ocean Beach, La Jolla, and San Diego Zoo are just a few of the locations that shouldn’t be missed either.
