This is a guest post from Mastin Kipp of The Daily Love.
Check out all Mastin’s updates as he gets to know the real London via our most amazing Airbnb hosts.
Today was an emotional and touching day – one of those days that make all the hard days worth living through. I had the pleasure and honor to meet Airbnb host Tessa in Camden.
This woman is a living and breathing embodiment of everything that my work at the Daily Love stands for! I don’t even know where to begin.
When we got to her place, she had a beautiful piano sidewalk outside. Upon entering her home I learned that Tessa was a goblin in one of my all time favorite movies – LABYRINTH! Tessa used to be a location manager and actress and had been around the London film scene during the making of many of the formative films of my youth. We immediately connected.
Tessa was upbeat, alive, and READY to talk about anything and everything. Before coming to see Tessa, we learned that she had myalgic encephalomyelitis, an inflammation in her brain that was caused by overworking for almost a decade with 100-hour weeks. Tessa went from being a VERY active and alive person to someone with little to no energy and little to no contact with the world.
She had hit rock bottom. And it’s places like rock bottom where we have the incredible power of choice. Do we give up, or do we, as JK Rowling suggests, use rock bottom as solid foundation to build on.
Rowling (author of the Harry Potter books) once said that failure and decay strip away everything that isn’t essential. She knew what she was talking about, having spent dark periods of her life mired in depression and hopelessness.
Like Rowling, Tessa had hit rock bottom. But rather than choosing a tragic path, Tessa acted like Rowling’s phoenix, rising from the ashes.
Tessa got better and better, but it wasn’t until Airbnb came along that her life was changed for the better, forever. Her world used to only consist of her bed and her kitchen. She had little to no contact with the outside world and she had no vision for a compelling future. She thought life was over.
But over time, as she got better and discovered Airbnb, all that changed. All of a sudden Tessa was linked with an international community of adventurers and travelers. All of a sudden she was earning money – more than enough to cover her cost of living. All of a sudden, her entrepreneurial spirit kicked in and she started having vision for more ways to live her dreams using Airbnb.
All of a sudden Tessa had purpose, connection, love, AND a compelling future.
These are the ingredients for a rich and meaningful life. I think the most powerful thing Tessa shared today was that the people that she has met, the three and a half months of bookings she has lined up, and the connection to this community give her ENERGY. And ENERGY, for someone with chronic fatigue, is precious manna.
How much energy? Well, Tessa took me and our ragtag team around Camden to Camden Lock, a super fun cafe and garden. And all the while, she was zooming ahead of us, almost out of distance.
Because of Tessa’s incredible power of choice to get better, to give what happened to her an empowering meaning and the almost miraculous connection and network she has made, Tessa’s life is on the way up.
I can’t WAIT for you to see her episode. Like us, I am sure you will be in blissful tears.
