From singing about milkshakes to studying culinary arts, food is an abiding passion for Kelis. Airbnb partnered with the Grammy-nominated musician, chef, cookbook author, and sauce maker on an exclusive Cooking Experience in Los Angeles, where guests learned to prepare some of her favorite recipes. Here, she shares her food-forward guide to LA.

MUSIC AND FOOD are a perfect pairing, and no one straddles both worlds quite like Kelis who, in addition to being a Grammy-nominated musician, is a Cordon Bleu-trained chef and cookbook author. “I’ve always really loved food. My mom was a chef, and had a catering business growing up, so when the opportunity presented itself to go to culinary school, of course I decided to go,” says Kelis, who was raised in New York’s Harlem and now resides in Los Angeles.

Hankering for her Harlem roots (and favoring the saucier station in the kitchen) led Kelis to create her own line of all-natural sauces, Bounty & Full. “Being from New York, I’m used to eating a lot of Caribbean food and every time someone told me about a Caribbean restaurant [in LA], I would go, and it just wasn’t what I was looking for, so I decided to make my own jerk sauce. From that it spiraled into interesting takes on BBQ sauce and hot sauce.” Kelis likens her cooking style to her personality: “really bold, flavorful, spicy, and fun!” A budding farmer, she’s currently growing tomatoes and squash and preparing to grow coffee. A contrast to the music industry, she appreciates the earthy, non-glamorous element that producing and cooking food brings to her life. “I’m still very much a musician and a writer,” she says. “Being a chef is just another thing I love to do.”

 

THE EXPERIENCE

Guests joined Kelis at a commercial kitchen in Los Angeles for a hands-on cooking class, where she taught the techniques she has learned throughout her culinary training. Working with professional equipment, the group prepared a few of Kelis’ favorite flavor-packed recipes.

KELIS’ LA

“I live on the eastside of LA. I love the fact that we have so much diversity here. Within a five-mile radius, there’s a Korean market, a Thai market, an Indian market, Armenian, and Cuban. It’s like I’m traveling around the world in 20 minutes. It’s dope.” 

Cheap Eats:  I’ve never eaten so many tacos in my life; LA is definitely great for tacos. Guisado’s, Salus, Leo’s, the list is pretty heavy for tacos. KyoChon chicken in Koreatown is great for wings.

Fine Dining:  Majordomo, Broken Spanish, Animal—all amazing.

Produce & Provisions:  El Mambi is great for a Cuban Market, and HK market.

Nature: I love hiking out here. Eaton Canyon is great.

Workout:  I go to Motivate Studios for the Lagree method. It’s super high intensity cardio Pilates. You really sweat.

Wellness: If you haven’t been to a Korean Spa, you absolutely must. I love Olympic, Beverly Hot Springs, and CJ Grand Health Spa.
