On April 19th, we announced big changes to how you can get more bookings with the right guests for your listing. We spent a year researching the best ways for hosts and guests to share their preferences, so everyone’s expectations of the trip are met—or exceeded. Because we always design with you in mind, we sent researchers around the globe to explore ideas with hundreds of hosts. Since our launch in April, we’ve made the new search experience available on mobile to more and more members of the community so you can try it and share your feedback.
We’re learning and improving this product side by side with you, and we’re excited to share what we’ve heard from you so far.
You love being matched with travelers who fit your hosting style.
The result of more precise matches means you can spend less time answering questions and setting expectations. One host told us they love the potential of matching because, “It will save so much time and in some cases disappointments.” By collecting detailed host and traveler preferences before searching for results, we’re able to show travelers options that fit. Searching by neighborhood type helps travelers find communities they’ll love, and the new guidebooks allow them to experience the city as if they lived there. And when your guests feel like they belong, it can boost your hosting success.
You want more control over which neighborhood your listing is associated with.
If you live just outside the borders of popular neighborhoods, you don’t want to miss out on the guests who want to spend their time in the area. For that reason, we’re exploring ways to make sure nearby listings aren’t left out when travelers search sought after spots. If you live right on the border between two neighborhoods and think your listing is associated with the wrong one, let us know. We even have a cartographer on staff to help clear up boundary concerns.
You’re the expert on describing your own neighborhood.
We collected vivid, inviting descriptions for 691 neighborhoods in 23 popular cities from hundreds of hosts who live there. When your guests check out, they’ll help validate and improve the descriptions by sharing their impression of your neighborhood. But you’ve asked what happens when your neighborhood description doesn’t capture the location’s full personality.
We’re constantly improving and evolving these descriptions, with the goal of making them accurate, helpful, and inclusive of your impressions. And while these descriptions develop and improve, you can let travelers know what you know! If you live on a quiet street in a lively neighborhood, your listing page is the perfect place to tell travelers that they can have it all: a quiet oasis in the middle of the excitement.
You want to know if filtering by neighborhood will decrease visits to your listing.
We’re slowly introducing and we’re carefully monitoring this change to make sure we aren’t hurting your business and that more guests can find a good match. Our goal is to make sure your listing is most visible to the travelers most likely to book it and be delighted with their experience living there. We’ll be able to share the trends we’re seeing soon, so stay tuned.
We’re continuing to roll out the new search experience to more of the community so we can respond to your feedback and tailor the product to your needs. Tell us what you think! And thanks to each of you who have sent your feedback already—we’re working on improvements inspired by your ideas even now.
