Yesterday, at 3:47 PM PST we started investigating some issues with our calendar API. We immediately assembled a task force of engineers and found a serious bug in our system. The problematic code was added 6 years ago by an intern, and had remained undetected until now.

Our team is still trying to understand how many users have been affected by this issue. Looking through old support tickets, we’ve found countless reports of dizziness and disorientation. We’ve also heard of guests losing track of time and misplacing their cellphones, laptops, and other electronics.

We now think we can attribute these complaints to the time and space paradox shifts that have happened on account of this bug. We’re also guessing it explains the influx of papyrus scrolls, old postcards and emails from AOL addresses we’ve received over the years.

We sincerely apologize to our community for letting this go on for so long. Time travel is no laughing matter. The team is working around the clock until we find a fix.

In the meantime, please let us know if you experience anything out of the ordinary while searching on Airbnb. Here are a few of the reports we’ve luckily resolved:

  • We found the intern responsible for creating this bug hiding out in a villa in ancient Greece. He had become a soothsayer, known for his epic toga parties. Our Trust & Safety team was able to get him home safely, where he was promptly promoted to producing company theme parties.
  • One user, Jim, wasn’t so lucky. He was only transported back in time a full day and was forced to relive a pretty tough breakup. Thankfully, Jim said he’ll continue using Airbnb, as long as we never remind him of she-who-will-not-be-named. We’ve gifted him a lifetime supply of ice cream to help him cope. (Sorry, Jim!)
  • Sonia, one of our hosts since 2012, was attempting to get away from it all and booked a charming looking cave in Europe. Unbeknownst to her, it wasn’t one of our whimsical listings, but an actual cave circa 2000 BCE. Despite the glitch, she said her hosts were very welcoming and even taught her some new painting techniques.

We appreciate your patience as we work through these issues. We’ve cancelled any trips that were made to the past, so if your trip is still confirmed, you’re in the clear. Safe travels!
