Christine is an Airbnb host in New South Wales, Australia. She lives and hosts near Blue Mountains National Park in the town of Glenbrook, which is an hour’s drive east from Sydney. Guests describe Christine as a remarkable host who goes out of her way to provide help, comfort, and privacy.
Christine was one of four winners of a 2015 Host Award. These awards are the community’s opportunity to recognize exceptional hosts publicly at Airbnb Open. Christine earned the Hero award after caring for a guest in the face of unexpected adversity. For Igne, a traveler exploring Australia with her boyfriend, Christine’s empathetic and dedicated hospitality came through when it counted.
Soon after reaching Glenbrook, Igne suffered a miscarriage caused by a tumor in her womb. In response to the tragedy, Christine treated Igne like family and did everything she could to provide aid and support. She arranged an appointment with her family doctor and took Igne to see a local obstetrician. She also offered the couple the chance to stay longer to give them time to rest and recover. “She didn’t even charge us anything,” Igne says, “she moved heaven and earth to make me feel better and to help us.”
Christine doesn’t feel that she’s a hero. Instead, she believes she did “what anyone would do for Igne if they were looking after her.”
“For me as a woman, it was really important to take care of her at that time in her life,” Christine says, “I was older, she was younger. I wanted to give her that care.”
Igne and her boyfriend were far away from home, but Christine’s care and compassion made a difference by creating a sense of belonging. “In a situation like that, that’s what you need,” Igne says, “just a place to feel [at] home.”
Christine’s dedication extends to her local community. She recently started work as a classroom teacher, where she works to help children figure out their path in life. “She’s really helpful to everyone in the community. She will try to help wherever she can and whoever she can,” says Igne.
Christine also encourages other hosts in her community by sharing her knowledge of hospitality. In particular, she strives to show how simple acts of kindness can add up to heroic hosting. Her heartfelt advice is to “pay attention to [your] guests, anticipate their needs, and simply be there when they need you.”
